Wind turbine technician
Coast Renewables, Dundee

After spending six years working in the motor trade, Alex Muir enrolled on an SVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations in renewables, which led to a job as a wind turbine technician at Coast Renewables.

“I came across a course that was the first of its kind to give you basic engineering principles. It’s hard to actually get that first step into it but once your foot is in the door the opportunities are endless. The course changed the direction of my life.”

His role involves exchanging large, heavy hydraulic cylinders that adjust the position of the blades. It’s tough manual labour, but fundamental in ensuring the production of green energy across the UK. The role has brought a renewed sense of confidence in his future, and he feels positive about the growing industry .

“The sector is definitely growing because of how efficient these turbines are and how much energy they produce. There is plenty of work out there. You have to be relentless and follow every lead. It can be a case of the right place, right time but it’s having the right attitude going in.”
